Become an EQ Mentor Help
Others Achieve Success |

|
According to Wikipedia, emotional intelligence (EQ
for emotional intelligence quotient) is "the ability,
capacity, skill or self-perceived ability to identify, assess and
manage the emotions of one's self, of others' and of
groups." Another definition includes the ability to
perceive, use, understand and manage one's emotions to achieve
particular goals. Those with a high EQ tend to be successful
in their relationships with others, whether at work or in social
or familial settings.
The study and application of EQ is relatively new, but
that has not stopped a number of companies from tapping
into the EQ market with mentoring programs for people who
want to improve their EQ, particularly when it comes to
getting ahead in the work place. One such company
with a good reputation is EQmentor, a North Carolina based
business that is currently hiring mentors to join its
team. In particular, EQmentor is seeking baby
boomers and retirees, people who have had (or are having)
a successful career and want to help guide younger
employees (mentees) toward success in their jobs and
careers. As the company says, the most effective way
to enhance one's EQ is to learn from someone who has
walked a similar path and to learn over a committed and extended
period of time.
All of EQmentor's mentoring takes place online and
is completely anonymous, providing a safe environment for
non-judgmental communication between mentor and mentee. The
mentoring relationship is long-term (mentees sign up for six or
twelve months and sometimes longer), and mentors are expected to
"meet" with their mentee at least three times per
week.
All mentors go through a rigorous background
check and are required to have at least five years more
experience than their mentees. They typically are 45+ years
of age and have been certified by EQmentor. The certification
process consists of reading the company's EQmentor Body of
Knowledge (BOK), completing a comprehensive examination based on
the BOK, and actual mentoring through online simulations.
All this is done before the mentors work with mentees.
