ChaCha Search Engine
Internet Guide |
Internet users visit search engines
(Google, Yahoo, etc.) to find information on the web.
Most search engines utilize complex coding and programming to
locate websites that correspond to keywords entered by the
user. A social search engine, instead of using coding and programming to find information a
user seeks, employs humans to do the same thing. ChaCha
is one such search engine. A user types in a question along
with his cell phone number. The answer to his question is
researched by a human ChaCha Guide and is then sent via text
message to the user's phone.
Those seeking to become a
ChaCha Guide must apply through the company website.
There are some basic requirements even before applying,
primarily a high speed (broadband) Internet connection,
512MB of RAM, a Firefox browser and Flash, which can be downloaded.
Applicants must also be 18 or older, speak English, have a
U.S. mailing address, write well and be authorized to work
in the U.S.
The job is home-based, and the initial
application, which is very brief, asks you to indicate
your interest in a number of topics. Our guess is
the more interests are checked, the better your chance of
receiving an application to proceed to the next step,
which is a 30 minute online test covering general problem
solving abilities, typing, and research ability.
If you pass this test, then you will be required to take a
simulator test in which you will need to research
questions and provide answers. This section is
manually graded, and you should know within seven days if
you passed and have the job. If you do not
pass, you can re-take the test by re-applying for the job.
Guide compensation is 20 cents per
inquiry/answer. According to the company, guides average $3
to $9 per hour; obviously, the faster you can find answers to
questions, the more you will earn. Hours are flexible.
There are no minimums or maximums to the number of hours you can
work as long as there are users asking questions. If hired,
you will be a contract employee and responsible for paying your
own taxes. A W-9 will be required before starting
work. Guide compensation is received via debit card or
direct deposit to your bank account once your ChaCha account
reaches $100. The company is seeking retirees, students,
work at home moms, etc.
