How to Make Money Blogging

Last week we talked about what a blog is and how to set one up (see here).  It was brought to our attention that the blog samples we provided were very fancy with copyrighted material, guest commentators and other bits of information that the average blogger probably would not be able to include in his or her blog.  So here are a few more blogs, all published using blogger.com, that are published by average bloggers:

So that now it's clearer what a blog is, how do you make money with one?  The most straight forward way, and the one we will discuss here, is simply called pay to post, meaning you write about products and services and are paid to do so by the manufacturers and providers of those products and services.  Usually a "middle man," a marketplace where these merchants come to find bloggers and visa versa, is involved and they take a cut of the income bloggers receive.   It's important that as a paid blogger you only write about products that fit the theme of your blog (so that you do not alienate your readers) and that which you can honestly recommend to your readers (although some marketplaces let you write negative reviews).  Some marketplace sites require that you disclosure that your posts are sponsored.

Below are several reputable middle man marketplaces where you can find merchants (advertisers) looking to pay bloggers for writing about their products.

www.bloggerwave.com

--- reputable site but we hear that they often pay late

www.blogitive.com

-- pays weekly but only pays $5 per post

www.reviewme.com

-- pays up to $200 per post

www.blogtoprofit.com

www.linkworth.com

www.payperpost.com

--- one of the first pay to post marketplaces; reputable but known to pay late; requires disclosure when writing about products or services

Most of these marketplaces pay between $5 to $200 per post (more in-depth and technical posts earn the most), although some only require a minimum number of posts per week (usually at least three) and pay a set amount each month. You must submit your blog for approval before you are paid for any posts, and generally the following conditions must be met, but these vary according to each marketplace:

  • Your blog must be 30 to 90 days old
  • Your blog must be indexed in Yahoo and/or Google; this is not difficult if you sign up with one of the blog websites we covered last week as their blog templates are search engine friendly and will be found by Google and Yahoo without your having to submit them
  • Your blog should be getting some traffic (the amount will vary by the marketplace)
  • Some blog entires must be non-paid to keep a balance of paid and non-paid entries

Bloggers can search for writing jobs and will usually write blog posts based on the an advertiser's press release.  A timeframe in which to complete a blog entry (or several at a time) is usually given and can be anywhere from a day or two to a week or longer.   Some advertisers will also pay you to link to their site, but we do not recommend this.  First, the pay is very low and it may hurt your blog's rankings with Google and Yahoo.   Most marketplaces make payment to you via Paypal bi-monthly or monthly.

So there are ways to earn extra money as a blogger.  The key is to establish a blog about a topic in which you are truly interested and can keep writing about.  Some themes (technology, banking, etc.) will bring higher paying writing assignments, but if you have no interest or expertise in them, your posts will show it and your blog may lose readers.  As a successful blogger, it is important to find a balance between seeming too commercial and keeping readers happy.
